The strong force of data gravity is driving the inevitable shift toward edge computing. Data gravity is a term that software engineer Dave McCrory came up with years ago to describe how large data sets attract services and applications, similar to how gravity pulls planets and stars together.
In the past, the center of gravity for data was in a data center. Now, it’s in the cloud. But then as we connect millions of gadgets to a network just at the edge to get data from the real world, the quantity of information these devices produce is growing faster than anything we’ve seen before. Now that 5G networks are being set up everywhere, it will be easy to do edge computing everywhere because of the ability to improve broadband service and performance.
Second, edge computing is fundamentally an ecosystem game. Even though each deployment is distinct and vertical, some of these ecosystems are starting to merge. And finally, open-source will be crucial to edge computing, just as it is in cloud computing. Stronger open-source collaboration among various projects and foundations will continue to develop, ultimately leading to a better and simpler method of developing and deploying software at the edge.
The benefits of edge computing and practical applications in IoT
As you can see, decentralizing data handling is the main goal of edge computing.
1. Enhanced data security
IoT devices are a great target for online attacks, but edge computing could indeed help you protect your networks and keep your data more private. Because the data is spread across all the devices that it has been made, it is hard for a single attack to shut down a whole network or get into all of the data.
2. Improved app functionality
The data must travel back and forth among the device as well as the data center, as was already mentioned. You can decrease lag time and enhance the overall performance of the app by storing as well as analyzing information close to its source. As a result, users can instantly and without delays analyze the data.
3. Enhanced business dependability and efficiency
More effective business operations are the result of less data traffic and cloud storage. Additionally, unlike with other IoT products which rely on the cloud, connection problems won’t be as troublesome. This is because your devices can operate independently, without an internet connection.
4. Endless scalability
Edge computing, in contrast to the cloud, enables you to scale the IoT network as necessary without taking into account the available storage. Edge computing really excels when it comes to moment tasks as a result of the aforementioned advantages.
