01. Context

The Challenge

Our client, a telehealth firm aimed at chronic-care patients, had previously spent a portion of their seed capital on a previous development attempt that failed. Their initial team had decided on separate native codebases for iOS and Android, and six months later, they had two half-finished apps, a growing backlog, and a board that was losing patience. They approached us with three hard constraints: 1. A specified 11-week deadline. The firm had a demo arranged with a group of healthcare investors and wanted a working app, not a prototype, by that date. 2. A fixed budget. There was no opportunity for scope creep or the high expenses associated with maintaining two native codebases concurrently. 3. Stringent compliance standards. As a healthcare app that stores, transmits, and accesses patient data, the product had to meet HIPAA criteria from the start. On top of these limitations, the fundamental product was ambitious. The application needed to support: - Ensure safe patient onboarding and identification verification - Video consultations with licensed providers. - Appointment scheduling and reminders. - Encrypted communication among patients and care teams - Integration with a third-party electronic health record (EHR) system - Push notification for medicine and follow-up reminders. Building and maintaining two independent native apps on this scale, timing, and budget was simply unfeasible. 02. Solution

How We Solved It

We advocated React Native from the beginning, and it served as the foundation for the entire project. A few factors influenced that decision: One codebase, two platforms. Our engineering team used React Native to write the application logic, UI components, and business rules once, then deployed them to both iOS and Android using the same codebase. This alone reduced our expected development time by roughly half compared to maintaining parallel Swift and Kotlin codebases, which was the single most important element in meeting the 11-week deadline. Smaller teams allow for faster iteration. Because React Native employs JavaScript and a component-based design familiar to web developers, we were able to staff the project with a small, cross-functional team rather than separate iOS and Android specialists. Instead of adding security at the end, we created the data layer first. All patient data was encrypted both at rest and in transit, and authentication was handled by a HIPAA-compliant identity provider. We also included stringent session timeouts and audit logs. The flexibility of React Native allowed us to integrate these compliance requirements into shared business logic once rather than implementing and testing the same security layer twice across two native codebases. Over-the-air updates provide quick corrections. Using CodePush-style over-the-air updates, we were able to distribute JavaScript-level bug fixes and UI changes straight to customers without having to wait for App Store and Play Store approval cycles — a big advantage during a short testing and feedback period. Our 11-week timeframe was essentially as follows: - Weeks 1 to 2: Discovery, technological architecture, and compliance planning - Weeks 3–7: Core feature development (onboarding, scheduling, messaging, video). - Weeks 8–9: EHR integration and third-party API work. - Weeks 10-11: Quality assurance, HIPAA compliance audit, App Store/Play Store submission, and investor demo preparation. Throughout the sprint, we held weekly demos with the founding team to allow priorities to move in real time without disrupting the timeline — a flexibility that a React Native process enabled far more easily than a traditional dual-native configuration.

The software was released on the software Store and Google Play in 11 weeks, just as promised, and came in under budget – savings that the business diverted toward their following funding round's marketing drive.
